Gig Review: The Sugababes at the LCR

Twenty-four years after their original formation, the pop and R’n’B sensation Sugababes graced the LCR stage for an amazing night of noughties hits. Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy are back together and touring again after years of breakups and makeups to perform their chart toppers and some new numbers. They were supported by special guests, R’n’B artist Kara Marni and DJ SHOSH who provided the perfect warm up with high energy pop and club anthems.

Kara Marni kicked of the night in style (I need her jeans for one, what an outfit) with her mix of pop, R’n’B and garage. Her songs “Twisted Fantasy” and “Trippin” really got the crowd going and everyone sang along to “Opposite” and her acoustic rendition of Coldplay’s “Fix You.” She was followed by SHOSH who provided the perfect noughties soundtrack to get us ready for Sugababes.

It made my childhood heart happy to see them perform live as I was a huge fan of them growing up and the fact that I was seeing them at my first proper concert made it a really special experience. Starting with “Push the Button” was the best way to energise the crowd and I loved seeing them perform some of my personal favourites of “Hole in the Head,” “Round Round,” “Red Dress,” and “Freak Like Me.” They also performed “Stronger,” “2 Hearts,” “Today,” “Ugly,” “Love Me Hard,” their debut song “Overload” from 2000, and their latest song “Flatline” from 2013.

I particularly loved their cover of Sweet Female Attitude’s “Flowers” which they made with DJ Spoony in 2019 and I honestly could have cried when “Too Lost in You” started as it is my favourite song of theirs. And finally, ending with their biggest hit “About you now” was the perfect way to end an amazing night of throwbacks. The crowd was buzzing with excitement and continued to sing even once they had left the stage. The whole night had such a great atmosphere, and I cannot wait to go to another gig.

You know it has been a great night when your feet ache from dancing by the end of it!
